The Trumpet & Bobby Guy

Bobby Guy was born in Lambertville, Hunterdon County, New Jersey on March 28, 1916 as William Robert Guy. There is not much known about him before he started playing trumpet with the the legendary Kay Kyser band in 1936 just as the metal horn shook off its military heritage and became a “modern” musical instrument (see Uranus in the 2nd house opposite Mars in the 8th) thanks to him and fellow impresario Louis Armstrong.

Modern day Lambertville from the Pennsy side.

Bobby joined the Kyser band on trumpet in the Spring of ’36. “A slightly imposing appearance betrayed a friendly personality. You could hear Bobby Guy’s laugh from across the room. He had a wonderful sense of humor.” Except for his stint in the service, Bobby stayed with the band until ’49. He freelanced after his KK band days, before joining NBC studios.

Georgia Carroll aka Mrs. Kay Kyser

He met Rose Marie when she was performing at a New Jersey nightclub before the war where Guy was playing too. Rose Marie claimed that she three days after meeting Guy that she would marry him.

Mr. Guy is a 16 Sagittarius Rising “sea gulls watching a ship” an interesting symbol as Lambertville is on the Delaware River across from New Hope Pennsylvania, but while this works as a literal symbol for his birthplace, figuratively it suggests his gift for recognizing opportunities when they are at hand. He is a southern based bowl temperament type that is almost the inverse of his wife Rose Marie’s prism and a spinning top if we use the Part of Fortune/ Mid-heaven with the Fire Grand Trine (06 Libra — man’s goals abundantly crystallized).

The War steps in

After a hiatus to serve in World War II, he and Rose Marie married in Jersey on June 19, 1946 — the day coincidentally after Kay’s birthday. In the 50’s he got a spot for the NBC orchestra & the family moved to Van Nuys California and played under contract there until his death in 1964.

1930’s Lambertville

The Sun at the 4th house cusp is sextile Pluto at the 7th and then sextile Uranus music in the 2nd showing how much being a musician meant to him and how he latched onto the trumpet at the right time (see his ascendant for more on that). His eager Mental Chemistry would have helped there, spotting the trend perhaps in a news article or radio show and then perfecting his “sound”.

A sudden embolism

He died of a strange and sudden blood clot (Mars in the 8th conjunct the South Node in the 7th both in Leo and conjunct the dissolving effects of Neptune at 30 Cancer – a fatal degree) on May 28, 1964 a fortnight before his 18th wedding anniversary. Rose Marie never remarried and based on his Jupiter and Sun conjunct in the 4th House, we know that chances are his sudden death was hereditary and he filled up his home life with music and laughter. He left behind a daughter, Georgiana Marie also.

We leave you bits of the Big Band sound that made the 1930’s alive and happening despite the doom and gloom of the Great Depression.

#108 Heavenly song: Celestina Boninsegna

The diva

Celestina Boninsegna was a born on 26 February 1877 in Reggio Emilia, Italy. She studied with composer Guglielmo Mattioli (1857-1924) for the opera and made her professional debut at 15 years of age.

Italy's r flag colours are red & green.
Reggio Emilia in red on the Italian map.

She is best known for her soulful interpretations of Verdi’s heroines, but she did have a wide repertoire including singing Rosaura in the world premiere of Pietro Mascagni’s Le Maschere (The Masks) — the librettist was Luigi Illica — on 17 January 1901 at La Scala opera house in Milan, Italy.

This was a rather circular homage for the diva — Mascagni’s Le Maschere was itself a respectful nod to Rossini under whom Mattioli, her voice maestro, studied

Diva Boninsegna made many recordings between 1904 and 1918, of which we highlight just one, that is beautiful in its clarity and resonant in depth, how well they captured her magnificent voice.

the astrological study

an early picture from OperaNostalgia.

Dr. Marc Edmund Jones correctly notes her Reggio Emilia birth of February 26th but without either a time or year. That is not surprising as opera singers likes Hollywood stars often obscured their age lest their fans think they were “too old.” Astro.com cites that its time 6:30 AM as questionable for Reggio nell-Emilia, Italy – the same town just its legal name so no change is warranted there. We have rectified the 6:30 AM to 6:33 AM giving her a Pisces 01 Ascendant — it works well in her chart particularly for the La Scala debut (see below).

The diva’s natal chart. She has one major opposition between Uranus in the sixth highlighting her individual career of voice and Mercury in the public sector of life. She has a fixed Grand Trine — though Neptune is wide of course — making her a Locomotive Temperament Type with Neptune driving her ambition.
The La Scala opening nite was a tremendous success for her. Look to the seventh house where the opera’s part of fortuna is conjunct her own. Click here to hear a piece, recorded years later, from it.
This last chart is sheer speculation, put up for astrological enjoyment. We do not know where she died, we imagine it was in Italy, so we picked Milan. Neither do we know what time or cause though we suspect it was of a heart attack (transiting Saturn opposite Mercury conjunct travelling Mars conjunct transiting Sun).

The many dances of Alexandria Ocasia y Cortez

Alexis Smith of the Real Political Astrology group on Facebook found thru her detective work the birth time of Alexandria Ocasia y Cortez, the wunderkind of the Democratic party from psychic Arthur Lipp-Bonewits of 11:50 AM.

We do not agree with the rather suspicious time, but we use it in the chart above because it is better than the 12 noon standard that modern astrologers adore, but apply it to the whole house system. Her birthplace of the Bronx, New York, is of course unchanged.

The Greening of Sandy

So who is she? Well if you don’t know you’ve been sleeping under a rock for the past four months. She is hard to miss, everyday she is in the newswires, but in short, she is a 28-year-old former bartender cum Bernie Sanders organizer who is the youngest person to be elected to congress after unseating #3 Democrat Joe Crowley, (#1 is Chuck Schumer, #2 is Nancy and then there was Joe) with a progressive platform that called for a $15 minimum wage, Medicare for All, tuition-free public college, and the abolishment of ICE.

Meghan McCain, daughter of the late Senator John McCain, went apoplectic on The View, warning against Ocasio-Cortez’s “dangerous” policies. Ex-Connecticut Senator Joe Lieberman, and good friend of Senator McCain, agrees and has a spitting match going on with her, for what he feels is the “future of the Party.”

Since getting sworn in, Ocasia-Cortez has incorporated her election winning platform in to the Green New Deal, a four part program for moving America quickly out of our climate crisis into a secure, sustainable future.

It is inspired by FDR’s New Deal programs that helped us out of the Great Depression of the 1930s, and is supported by the leader of the Green Party, Jill Green. Its aim to provide economic and climate relief by creating sustainable healthy and foremost just environment for everyone to work within.

Wholly AOC

With all that understood, we now turn to reviewing her chart using the whole house system because the time at hand is suspicious and at least gives us something to use.

In the Whole House System, everything in a house is conjunct, so in AOC’s chart, her ascendant and Venus are conjunct. It does not matter how far apart, what matters that it resides in the same sign, but the two together do show that AOC is rather vain with her  Stila’s Stay All Day in Beso (a.k.a. “true red”) that does not budge, thanks to some interesting chemistry. It retails about $22.00. That is probably why Beso’s recommendation by fellow New Yorker and fellow Latina SCOTUS Judge Sonia Sotomayor was welcomed; she immediately loved the bright colours and flamboyant style.

Beso, which means “kiss” in Spanish, was one of the original 10 colors the company launched in 2012. and it’s the company’s No. 2 best-selling shade. But since it is so bright, it does give her also a rather vain image, hearkening to Eva Peron and her red lipstick both of them photographed typically with their black hair slicked emphasizing their features.

Going around the wheel, AOC’s next cardinal house, the fourth, is empty, telling us that this means little to her as she is more of an out and about person. Also right on the cusp in the fifth is the Moon in Aries bestowing a wild temper particularly when challenged because of her drive and strong need for self-assertion.

This Moon placement is an important aspect in her chart, because it makes Ocasia-Cortez planetary temperament type a bucket with a moon handle — that handle leads her where she wants to go. As the moon rules intuition & feelings when not in high focus but as the handle, it’s meaning and effect on her chart changes. Instead of just emotional intuition, the Moon in AOC’s chart becomes an “intensifier” that takes all the various circumstances and activities that occur in her and intensifies their meaning and through this action Ocasia-Cortez gets to her next destination. She does not deliberate about her career path, but instead sees an opening and jumps on it — following her gut, secure in the knowledge it will not steer her wrong but OTOH there is nothing within her own psychological system to stop her.

Going counterclockwise on the wheel, the next cardinal spot is Gemini at the seventh house, also empty. This allows us to fill in our portrait of Ocasia Cortez as someone who is not much of a negotiator tending to go it alone, and rely more on her own resources. That is discordant though with her Part of Fortune right on its cusp at 28.45 Taurus (remembering that Jones rounds up) or 29 Taurus — the symbol of Two Cobblers working a table.

The Part of Fortune is one’s guiding light, and the symbol of Two Cobblers recommends instead synergy & not individuality — that her career success is dependent upon others. It also reinforces the age old adage from William Shakespeare’s play The Tempest that
“Misery acquaints a man with strange bedfellows”,   easily adapted to the political arena.

This symbol with the keyword “Capability” warns Rep. Ocasia Cortez that she needs to avoid frittering away her talents on every fish in the sea and instead focus. The final cardinal spot, the tenth house, under the whole house is not necessarily the Midheaven but neither does she have any planets there, so while she has a plethora of Cardinal Signs they are not in cardinal houses.

Returning to the beginning, we move onto the succedent houses that are traditionally assigned to fixed houses. In Ocasia Cortez’s chart, the second house has three Cardinal planets gathered within its borders. In the center of the group is Saturn found in his essential Lord Capricorn opposite Jupiter that Marc Jones marks as an especial aspect, the Aspect of Social Significance.

from the Andrew Lloyd Webber play “Evita”. Patti LuPone was named for her
great-great aunt was 19th-century opera singer Adelina Patti.

Jones in his “Essentials of Astrological Significance” when in opposition is an ordering of the person’s motives through which the native tends to dramatize himself, something we already noted with her red lipstick and slicked hair, and results in a grand “expenditure of personal resources” that can create a caricature of themselves that lessens their achievements or efforts.

In the last quadrant, a great preponderance of planets appears with Mercury leading the pack. Her Midheaven shows up near Mercury at 06.22 Libra. We find once again, lots of cardinal planets, in Fixed Houses, suggesting her willpower is strong and her determination to go the distance, but we have to reiterate Jones’s warning, as it gets crystallized in the eleventh house, assigned to the public, as long as her base encourages to do so.

Cadent wise, Pluto in Scorpio is the only activity that occurs in a mutable house. It supports the rest of the her chart making her more reliant on popular appeal than she or most realize. Pluto is also semisextile her ascendant in the first house, but this tells us more about her concern for personal privacy, and why nothing about her family, beliefs, upbringing or social ties are known; it has nothing to do about her career motivations other than a desire to work with established enterprises.

Again our thanks to Alexis for reaching out to Arthur. As for Alexandria, I am sure we’ll be hearing from her further as her career goes on because it is obvious her ambition has just begun to pick up speed.

Week of 12/3-12/9 in Kansas City Missouri

We are winding down our 50 state tour.  This week is Missouri, next is Wyoming, then Michigan and Arizona and finally New York.  Missouri smack in the middle of the continental 50 comes and goes in the news.  One writer, MacKinley Kantor, wrote a book on the state’s past called “Missouri Bittersweet” that is part travelogue and part history tracing the Show Me’s cultural history from slavery, the Underground Railroad, to Mark Twain and the railroad desperadoes like  Jesse James.   I think it’s the only book dedicated to Missouri, at least that I’ve seen.  As expected from Pulitzer prize winner Kantor, (Andersonville) it’s well written and enjoyable.

                The week’s highlights

Our week’s chart is a self-contained-bowl from Washington D.C. to honour the recently departed President George H. W. Bush for his lifelong service in keeping with a White House Tradition. We get an ascendant of Cancer 01 for the affair, or a “flag’s furling and unfurling. ” Furling is when the flag is rolled up tightly and made secure to a staff or mast while unfurling is when the flag is dismounted.   This symbolic action show’s a person’s unshakable determination to further their every ambition  by anticipating every possible reaction so that they can feel one step of their competition.

President G. Bush giving eulogy for his father at the Capitol.

Indeed, the flags are half-mast today and Mercury is retrograde in the sixth showing above the slowing down of governmental affairs below including the shuttering of the post office (conjunct the Moon) for a day’s respite. But don’t let that lull you into false complacency:  cancer has a TransNeptunian preponderance that is mind blowing from 01 on and suggests that there are blocks (Admetos) and leadership/vision questions (Kronos) still unsettled from last week or even previous months.

The Part of Fortune at 17 Cancer “a germ grows into knowledge”  is unfolding problems, questions as it creates a space for its own identity and a vigintile away from the ascendant suggests that as one stage changes another one maybe also be taking advantage of that life force.

President and Mrs. Donald Trump, sr. honoring the fallen president.

Finally a semi-sextile away at 02 Leo, we meet Vulkanus right on the third house cusp square Venus reminding us that foolishness and violent attacks may occur and so we should watch not only with whom we are partying with this season but also where (square sixth house and Persephone + Jupiter + Atlantis ) as the  issues of leadership/host/authority abuse rise its ugly head.  It maybe cold out there, be careful of strange and unwanted bedfellows; there really maybe hell to pay (Persephone abducted by Hades).

Neptune conjunct Mars at the top of chart reiterates that message — the season is filled with honest and straight dealing characters but alas the obverse suggests that those who insincere and duplicitous maybe using that for cover.  Be abstemious in drink and exert self control be wary of those ethereal friends who want to meet up for the holidays and above all watch for vindictiveness, bullying and too good to be true offers — they probably are.

The spirit though yearns for excitement and so these wild schemes and effusive people seem to be lending the holiday some extra pizzazz, alas there is always a morning after.

Jupiter is Sagittarius is conjunct the asteroid Persephone, also in the sixth, but here there is some anxiety in the air and people start to worry that things won’t arrive on time because of another delay, or that they themselves won’t be able to celebrate the holidays as they had hoped.  That carries forwards to Bacchus at 15.09 Sagittarius conjunct the Sun  where scurrying for Christmas trees, Christmas decorations and those attendant parties where mistletoe are furled freely.

President & Mrs. George Walker Bush

Alas the pair is sextile Venus in Scorpio in the sixth, making a new problem arise in this day of click and ship,  and that is what to  get those special someone’s a good gift  as even children are now “people who have everything.”  Perhaps the southern based bowl is telling us, that just “being” there is the real treat. CBSnews, gives a full recounting of the elegant ceremony.

                    I’ll be Home for Christmas

I’ll be Home for Christmas was written by Kim Gannon, Walter Kent and Buck Ram. It was first copyrighted on August 24, 1943, by Kent (music) and James “Kim” Gannon (lyrics). . The label on Crosby’s recording credits “I’ll Be Home for Christmas” to Kent, Gannon, and Ram. Later recordings usually credit only Kent and Gannon.

Sully, President G. H.W.  Bush’s service dog at his master’s side, one last time.

The discrepancy arose  on December 21, 1942  when Buck Ram copyrighted a song titled “I’ll Be Home for Christmas (Tho’ Just in Memory)”—a song bore little resemblance to the Crosby recording.  Ram, who was primarily a lyricist, he wrote the  lyrics as a 16-year-old, homesick college student. Prior to his publishers planned release, he had discussed the song with two acquaintances in a bar. He left a copy with them, but never spoke to them about it again. Both he and his publisher were shocked when the song was released by a competing publishing house.  Ram’s publisher, who had been holding the song back a year because they were coming out with “White Christmas,” sued Gannon and Kent’s publisher and prevailed in court.

Kent and Gannon revised and re-copyrighted their song on September 27, 1943, and it was this version that was made famous by Crosby. On October 4, 1943, Crosby recorded “I’ll Be Home for Christmas” with the John Scott Trotter Orchestra for Decca Records. Within about a month of Kent and Gannon’s copyright of the song hit the music charts and remained there for eleven weeks, peaking at number three. The following year, the song reached number nineteen on the charts. It touched a tender place in the hearts of Americans, both soldiers and civilians, who were then in the depths of World War II, and it earned Crosby his fifth gold record.

“I’ll Be Home for Christmas” became the most requested song at Christmas U.S.O. shows in both Europe and the Pacific. Yank, the GI magazine, said Crosby accomplished more for military morale than anyone else of that era.
Later renditions, both post war,  were recorded by Frank Sinatra and Perry Como and were equally successful.

           Song’s Lyrics

  • Verse 1.
    • I’ll be home for Christmas You can plan on me
    • Please have snow and mistletoe
    • And presents on the tree
    • Christmas Eve will find me  Where the love light gleams

Atari’s Pong + Ted Dabney

Ted Dabney (far left) stands in front of a Pong arcade machine in 1973 with (left to right) co-founder Nolan Bushnell, head of finance Fred Marincic, and the man credited with the idea for Pong, Allan Alcorn…from NPR News.

Mr Dabney has a good chart for an engineer- lots of earth signs and little air to get in the way (air being inharmonious to earth would make him dawdle).  He was born on May 12, 1937 in San Francisco, California, his parents divorced when he was young and he did the same when his daughters were young too.

                                        No ping, just Pong

The name of the game, Pong, came from his sailboat, hence salty Neptune at Virgo 17 in the fifth house to Juno at 26 where partnerships blossom and while not opposite Saturn in the eleventh, the latter planet still led to disappointment in friendships when Bushnell pushed him out and kept the millions of Atari for himself.  The Mars in Sagittarius in the seventh house, trine, did not help in this case but probably added fuel to the fire, as did the third trine in Cancer set the scenario for an explosive partnership.

Water trines never stay still, but move on, and so did Dabney and Bushnell’s partnership, this time working out better for the fun fare of Chuck E. Cheese, the family video game pizza parlour (Juno had the last laugh there as second time was a charm, for she is trine his exalted Moon and  Taurean Mercury).

ted death.png

Mr. Dabney died in Los Angeles at 81 on May 26th.  Nolan Bushnell sent his regrets.  He was a Locomotive Temperament Type, and after noting a few on this pages, we know that they have to do it their way (see Rex Tillerson) or not at all.  With Venus starting this train, chances are most of his ideas just came to him out of the blue (often called inspiration) based on something he really enjoyed (sailing and pizza).  The end of track is Uranus just coming up to his Ascendant, telling us that out of all that sweat and hard work came the ability to transmute  it to genius.

Loved the game.

Dust Storm in Uttar Pradesh/Rajasthan India

The time is from the BBC news site where you can watch this video to get an idea of the devastation of the dust storm. It is mesmerizing to watch such havoc.

The Chart above looks colourful but understanding the key makes it coherent. Start with the Opposition from the fourth house to the winds and fears of the ninth and Sagittarius. This storm happened quickly, coming upon the populace while they were sleeping and dreaming, perhaps though fitfully. Without warning Mars in the tenth at Capricorn ushers in a series of hard hitting planets, first gaining force from Pluto right next down who picks up the skeletons of the earth (sands) and tosses them to Vesta who stokes up the fires and makes the 100 degree heat become oppressive like an inferno.

Sands pelts and now those dreams become nightmares. Those who can run, do, but Pallas next to Venus near the fourth house cusp, makes for confusion of where is safety. From that blue circle hitch a ride to the turquoise sextile one on the right and notice that another intensifier of Ceres (11 Leo) is also  sextile Jupiter (via the brown line) that gives effusive madness and yet a dilatory langour as all the air is sucked out of the area. On one side Jupiter is swirling and spreading sand, sextile the preponderance of Cardinal Capricorn letting rip, and on the other, Jupiter is on the eighth-ninth house cusp creating death with  old Jove opposite the Sun in Taurus in the third house creates another t-cross of pandemonium.

Follow the colours — shades of blue are in agreement as are tones of gold, but they don’t get along with one another. As there are a lot of slow moving planets involved and a lazy Sun, in this resourceful Eastern-based bowl that works upon the populace (eleventh house mayhem opposite Ceres who favours dirt) like a two-edged sword.  Perhaps this is her prelude to her traditional  Ambarvalia later this month?

The IT Girl and Rex Bell

Clara Bow and Rex Bell became an “item” in Hollywood and since she was a major star and he a little no body in Westerns, the pair eloped, tieing the knot on December 3, 1931 in Las Vegas. They settled down on a large ranch in Searchlight, Nevada shortly thereafter and while Clara starred in a few talkies, because of her strong Brooklyn accent, she was petrified of them and opted to retire from the screen leaving hubby Rex to travel between the California studios and their Nevada home. As time went on Rex got more involved in business and Nevada politics and they sold the ranch.

Born George Francis Beldam on  October 16, 1903 in Chicago, Rex Bell was a Hollywood “name,” but he liked it and kept it.  The Bedlam family migrated west after World War I looking for better opportunities first to Iowa and then California.  More information on this cowboy can be found at the vintage Western site, OK Corral, here.

rex bell sr..png

We rectified Mr. Bell to 21 Libra, see the chart above, giving him a sunrise birth chart.  His map highlights that he travelled for his film career, not only first from Iowa but also between his Nevada ranch and family, to Los Angeles for work.  His seventh house  cusp is 25 Aries and its lord is found right between his Part of Fortune and Uranus in the second house, perhaps hinting how his charm won Miss Bow and his fans.

Mercury is in the twelfth house, depicting how Westerns were low on conversation but with the his Sun there as well, high on strong action and willfulness.  The square between Venus and Mars indicates how Westerns and Nevadan politics later on,  worked well to his advantage — snap decisions, short term objectives and a high energy level all suit those professions well.  It is not too hard to see how “elopement” worked into that picture either.

Mr Bell and Miss Bow remained married for 31 years until his demise on July 4, 1962 in Las Vegas, Nevada.  They had two children, Rex and George, both who followed their father in the Western Hollywood tradition.  Miss Bow passed in September 27, 1965 in Hollywood.
